In Quinta do Lago, this exterior villa painting project changed the way the house reads. The façades, previously yellow, are now a pale grey-green, and the architectural details (the porch columns, cornices and window surrounds) are picked out in white.
The villa has two storeys, a colonnaded porch and a first-floor balcony. It is the kind of façade that is painted in two languages: broad planes in one colour, trims, mouldings and columns in another. A clean line between the two is what you notice from a distance, and what takes the most time up close.
One of the photographs was taken halfway through, with the scaffolding up: the original yellow still below, the new shade already above. It shows the colour was changed over the whole surface rather than touched up where it had faded. A change like this needs even coverage, with no trace of the yellow showing through.
For the owner, the new colour also renews the façades' protection in an area where sun and sea air wear exterior paint down year after year. The white columns and cornices once again draw out the architecture of the house against the new background.
