What we did
This exterior villa painting project in Olhão involved a three-storey house with three materials on show: painted render, brown bands and a brown pergola, and brick-coloured ceramic cladding. Each needed different treatment, and the work was planned material by material. On a house like this, one treatment for everything would have done more harm than good.
The render was worn and flaking, as the photographs with the scaffolding up make clear. The work began with pressure washing the façades, followed by repairs to the render where it had failed, so that the paint would sit on a sound substrate.
The timber pergola was prepared and given a dark primer before the finish. The bands on the façade were painted the same brown as the pergola, pulling the elements of the house together.
The ceramic cladding was not painted. It was washed, bringing back its original colour without altering the material. Painting it would have hidden the texture and created a new surface needing upkeep.
For the owner, the result is a façade where the white, the brown and the ceramic read as one again, with repaired render beneath the paint and the pergola's timber protected.

Not on this house. The ceramic was washed to bring back its original colour, and paint went only on the render, the bands and the pergola.
