What we did
On this microcement bathroom project in Boliqueime, completed in 2025, the finish was applied to walls and vanity units. Before the work, the vanity units were bare concrete structures, as the before photographs show: one in a corner, one wall-hung with a lower shelf, another double.
Microcement is a coating only a few millimetres thick, so it hides nothing: whatever lies underneath eventually shows at the surface. Before the first coat, the substrate has to be firm, clean and even, and the edges of the vanity units crisply defined.
It is applied by hand, coat by coat, until it forms one continuous, seamless surface that runs the length of the vanity unit and carries on up the wall without a break. Here the shade changes from bathroom to bathroom: white in one, pale grey in another, with a different basin in each.
In a bathroom, the final sealer is what protects the surface from water and daily use, and it is chosen to suit each area.
For the owner, the result is vanity units and walls in a single surface, with no joints for dirt to collect in, and a hand-applied finish that gives each bathroom its own shade. The before-and-after slider shows the same corner vanity unit, in bare concrete and finished.

Area
Boliqueime is a parish in the municipality of Loulé, between Albufeira and Loulé and a few kilometres inland from the coast. In a bathroom the real test is not salt or sun but everyday water and steam. That is where the preparation of the substrate and the sealer decide how long microcement stays as it was on day one.
